Moving the cursor over the maps in the Map Browser reveals a count of how many Stations we have catalogued as broadcasting Internet content in the state or country directly under the mouse pointer. Click on a state or country to generate a list of those Stations on the right-hand side of the Map Browser panel. You then double-click any of the links to begin playing that Station through your Mac! For example: to hear news in China, use the Map Browser to select the "Asia" continent. Next click on China in the map. Then, double-click on any link in the "News" category in the list of Stations to begin playing the selected station on your Mac.
The Search Engine allows you home in on particular stations or broadcast formats. For example: to find all of the Jazz stations in Louisiana, select "Louisiana" as a Location, "Jazz" as a format, and click the "Search" button. Double-click any link in the list to begin playing the selected station on your Mac. Or, if you are looking for a particular station, such as "WGST", you may enter those radio station call letters in the "Station Contains" field, then click the "Search" button.
The Favorites panel allows you to save your favorite Stations for quick access. You may also use the Favorites panel to store Stations which we may have not yet included in our Station Database. You may use the MacTuner program to submit your favorite Stations to us, which we will work to include in our next Station Database update.
How does MacTuner decide which Browser to use?
MacTuner uses your "Internet Config" settings to determine which browser is your system's "default" browser. If there are no Internet Config settings set, then it arbitrarily tries Explorer, then Netscape. If you want to always launch Netscape, then please set your Internet Config settings such that Netscape is your default browser.
I use AOL or @Home and am having connection problems.
If you are an @home user, please make sure you are running at least @home v1.6. If you are an AOL user, please make sure you are using at least v4.0. Earlier vesions of this software have resulted in MacTuner socket connection problems.
Sometimes I get errors trying to play a station. What do they mean?
Errors when starting or while playing a stream can be caused by a variety of problems. Any of the following reasons can cause errors:
- Problems with your Internet connection
- Network traffic problems
- Servers that may be down
- Servers that have reached their capacity
- Invalid links on the station website
- Outdated links in our database
While we attempt to keep the station database accurate, the stations are on servers around the world, and are changes or problems with these servers are beyond our control. When you get a RealAudio error, a dialog pops up with a short description. If you click the Go There button, you will be shown a more details description on the RealNetworks site. For a complete listing of realPlayer error codes, visit the Error Page at RealNetworks.
After clearing this popup error, MacTuner will show a dialog with additional information to explain errors, and tell you if you should do something about them. If a link in the MacTuner database doesn't work, but you find a good link on the stations database, please help us keep up to date by submitting the correction on our Submit page.
Will MacTuner work with a proxy if I'm behind a firewall?
Make sure you are running MacTuner 2.0.7 or later and you have put the proper Proxy information into the Proxy section of MacTuner's preferences. Unfortunately, our current Proxy support doesn't work in every Proxy environment. We're working to improve that.
MacTuner runs but errors with "Not connected to the Internet"
Are you connected to the Internet when you launch MacTuner? MacTuner will not make the connection for you. Are you behind a Firewall or Proxy Server?
I'm having Font Display Problems with MacTuner
A font display problem has been reported with Kaleidoscope 2.1.2. Disabling Kaleidoscope seems to resolve the problem. We are investigating the problem to determine if we can provide a better solution.
Why do some Stations have 'static'? How is that possible on the Internet?
Some people that do Webcasting (like this one) actually don't have a live feed directly from the Station, but instead use a Radio to get the signal, then encode it and feed it over the Internet. In cases like that, since the signal is coming over the air, it is subject to normal Radio interference and static.
MacTuner error that MacTuner can't find the application that created "play.ram"
RealPlayer either isn't installed or isn't installed correctly. You can check to see if the RealPlayer is installed correctly by finding a RealAudio file on the web and double-clicking on it. If it doesn't work, then something's wrong with your RealPlayer installation (or you haven't downloaded/installed RealPlayer). You can also checkout the RealAudio Support Page for solutions.
Why aren't there stations in a particular country?
We continue to add stations every week, in a continual effort to give you everything possible. However, we can't do it alone. Every country doesn't have a site offering streaming RealMedia, and some that do we haven't found yet. If you know of a site we should have in MacTuner, please visit our Submit page.
Will MacTuner ever support QuickTime and/or MP3s?
This is something we're investigating for a future release.
How do I update MacTuner's Station Database?
When MacTuner starts up, it automatically searches our database to determine if a Station Database is available. If so, you will have the opportunity to Upgrade Now or Upgrade Later. MacTuner does the work for you.
